Among the Greek gods, he is the closest to humankind and the most benevolent towards them: he gives them writing, dance, weights and measures, the flute and the lyre, and the means to rekindle a fire. Aristophanes says of him that "he is the most humane and the most generous of the gods." It was Hermes who bestowed speech upon Pandora, the first woman, and who presented Pandora to humankind. He embodies the triad of thought, speech, and action. God of speech, of the voice linked to his role as herald and justifying the custom of reserving for him the tongue of sacrificial victims, he is the one who bestows knowledge: "We ask for knowledge, a gift from Hermes." He is credited with the invention of mathematics and astronomy.
